About Poros
Poros is made up of two islands connected by a bridge - the smaller is Spheria - where you will find the lively port with its combination of luxury yachts, boutique shops, authentic waterfront tavernas and fishing boats. It is a beautiful spot to sit and watch the vibrant comings and goings.
Feeling energetic, wander through the quaint streets to the highest point, where you will find the landmark clock tower built in 1972, hidden restaurants and stunning churches. Once the sun goes down, the seafront boulevard comes alive with laughter and Greek music from its many waterfront bars and restaurants.
The second island Kalavria, has a sense of peace and serenity with its pine-covered backdrop and beautiful beaches dotted around the coastline. They are easily reached by car or bike, but my personal favourite is by quad bike or by hiring a little motor boat. Love Bay is considered the most beautiful beach; it is a small cove with blue-green waters framed by lush vegetation. Neorio, Monastiri and Askeli, are the most popular, but there are many others.
History
If you love ancient history, Poros has that too, and it is in easy reach of many famed ancient sites, monuments, churches and monasteries. In Poros ,One of those is Poseidon a large and beautiful temple built in 520 BC on one of the higher points of the island. Today, it is just ruins. But Myth has it that the God of the sea, Poseidon, gave Apollo, the god of the sun, the city of Delphi in exchange for Poros, the future site of the Temple of Poseidon. Poros is also said to be the birthplace of Poseidon's son Theseus, who is most famous for slaying the Minotaur on the Island of Crete.
